From our beautiful beaches in Hawaii to the remote Antarctic, plastic pollution is everywhere, harming animals like turtles and seabirds and impacting human health. Single-use plastic pollution is devastating our rivers, oceans, waterways and communities around the world. An estimated 17.6 billion pounds of plastic leaks into the marine environment from land-based sources every year, this is roughly equivalent to dumping a garbage truck full of plastic into the oceans every minute.
Research shows the effects plastic has on the Earth as well as on humans. It can take up to thousands of years for plastic bags and Styrofoam containers to decompose. In the meantime, it contaminates our soil and water. The toxic chemicals used to manufacture plastic gets transferred to animal tissue, eventually entering the human food chain. Styrofoam products are toxic if ingested and can damage nervous systems, lungs and reproductive organs.
As plastic pollution keeps increasing, it is urgent that companies take action and move towards business models that do not involve wasting the planet’s resources by turning them into disposable packaging. At Koko Kai, we see first-hand the impact that pollution has on our beautiful beaches, and we support efforts to reduce our dependence on single-use plastics. We want to do our part to prevent further damage to our environment and our waterways, which is why all of our delicious dairy free yogurts are bottled exclusively in reusable glass jars. We encourage customers to return their empty bottles to us, so we can wash, sanitize and reuse them, thereby not only reducing the amount of trash headed to the landfill, but also cutting pollution associated with shipping these containers thousands of miles across the ocean.
